Nassau County Sheriff Bill Leeper threw a party with a cake celebrating the conviction of Kimberly Kessler, who was found guilty of murdering hairstylist Joleen Cummings. Cummings was last seen working at a hair salon and was supposed to pick up her children but never showed up. Kessler, who used multiple aliases, was caught on security camera footage driving Cummings' car and disposing of trash bags.
DNA evidence also linked her to the crime. Kessler's erratic behavior in custody, including smearing feces and disrupting court proceedings, drew attention. She was sentenced to life without parole and the sheriff celebrated her departure.
